Ojos de Dios (God’s Eye)- Weaving Workshop with Melinda Young

Explore colour and texture in this fun workshop for all ages, while learning to make the traditional Mexican ornament Ojos de Dios (God’s Eye).

Using a variety of different wooden splints alongside knitting wool and embroidery threads you will learn to weave the simple patterns that form the basis of Ojos de Dios. These can then be finished off with the addition of pom poms, tassels or beads to make a wallhanging, mobile or even jewellery.

The workshop is suited for ages 7+
All materials are supplied, however participants may wish to bring along their own wool or embroidery threads to use.

Melinda Young is a contemporary jeweller based in Sydney, Australia. She has a Master of Visual Arts
from Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney and has participated in over 120 exhibitions in
Australia and overseas since 1997. Her work is held in collections including the Art Gallery of South
Australia and has been featured in numerous publications. In addition to working from the jewellers’
bench, Melinda has had extensive professional involvement with contemporary craft and design through
employment in galleries, as a teacher, curator and writer.

Melinda is fascinated by the narrative potential of everyday materials. Her surroundings provide continual inspiration and materials for her work, which frequently toys with our perceptions of ‘the natural’. She also has a particular interest in traditional and folk crafts.
